UK Pressure Map This is the Pressure and Precipitation chart for Europe and the North Atlantic showing the expected situation at lunchtime on the day shown. The white lines on the chart show Isobars. Weather fronts have been added to the chart to illustrate the movement of the weather. Precipitation is represented by the dark areas showing rainfall, while the white areas showing snowfall.
UK Visible Satellite The Meteosat 7 Geostationary Satellite is located 36,000 km above the planet's surface. It orbits around the earth at the same speed as the earth's spin which means that it stays at the same point relative to the earth's surface.
UK Radar The pictures show computer generated radar images which use artificial colours to show where there is a radar echo of falling rain droplets. The brighter the colours (which are calibrated against rain gauges) then the heavier the rain. The information is supplied as a raw data feed which is then superimposed over the BBC Weather Centre's own precisely aligned maps to create the final image. These images are updated, on average, on a three hourly basis.
UK Wind The wind chart shows the expected wind profile at lunchtime on the day shown. The size of the arrows only gives an indication of the wind strength and the wind direction is shown by the orientation of the arrows.
Continental Europe weather More from Meteosat 7- These pictures are UK Infra-Red Meteosat Images which come in to the BBC Weather Centre from the Met Office and are updated at three hourly intervals. Infra-Red satellite images measure the heat of particular objects (for example clouds or the surface of the sea).
