The Flying Medical

The NPPL (National Private Pilots Licence) Medical Certificate is now a simple declaration of fitness by you (which you get your normal GP to counter sign, and no examination necessary -yes, this is for real!). With very few exceptions you are medically fit to fly solo unless you have a medical condition which prevents you from driving a car.  This medical declaration entitles you to fly daytime, VFR (visual flight rules) in the UK and its environs (UK airspace).  You can download the form to print out (including notes for pilots and notes for your GP) in adobe acrobat reader format Download the necessary medical forms & notes here (only 9k download) hard copies are normally available from the CFI (Chief flying instructor) at Lands End.

Or if you want  the full 8.7mb Medical package: (Full DVLA standards on which the medical is based, data sheets adobe acrobat reader, forms etc) will answer every query you or your GP may have. Download the full package here (8.7mb download, zipped)

The JAR PPL medical (Geographical Europe outside of the UK including most eurozone members) has still to be carried out by an AME (Aviation medical examiner) this will be needed if you intend to fly at night, on instruments or outside the UK.  you will also require this licence (and medical) as a minima if you are training with a view to a commercial flying career later.

Note that the training is slightly different for each type of licence, the NPPL is basically a UK Sport Pilots Licence (as familiar to US pilots), which enables 99% of club pilots in the UK to carry on exactly as they normally do, but without the frequent and onerous medical requirements and costs that we had to suffer until 2002. Please ask the CFI (Chief Flying Instructor) for advice about a commercial flying career, many commercial pilots started their careers with a trial lesson at Lands End.
